Kolkata, Oct. 8. - Rome:  Fr. John Christy Irudayam, of the Province of Chennai (INM), defended his thesis for Licentiate in Spiritual Theology with Specialisation in Salesian Spirituality, on 7th October 2013, at the Salesian Pontifical University, Rome. The thesis titled 'Salesian Apostolic Spirituality - a Spiritual Heritage, an Inspiration and a Challenge', was lauded as 'well done' and 'comprehensive' by the two guides - Prof. Aldo Giraudo SDB and Prof. Joseph Boenzi SDB - each experts in their own right, on Don Bosco, his times and his spirituality.
Presenting his views on the work, the Guide, Fr. Giraudo remarked that 'the work summarises in a gist the real essence of Don Bosco's Spirituality specially as seen in his apostolate and the way it is translated in the context of India today.' He commended the systematic approach and the comprehensive treatment of the subject, notwithstanding the actual vastness of the matter in question.

The Reader, Fr. Boenzi, pointed out that the work brings forth four major themes of study, each of which could be developed into a research article. He underlined the excellent contribution that the thesis offers to the ongoing reflection on Salesian Spirituality and Mission today.

Presiding over the panel, Fr. Vaghese Kalluvachel SDB, highlighted the fact that both the guides, indubitably experts in Salesian Spirituality, have found the work excellent and praiseworthy.

Addressing the packed hall, Fr. John Christy expressed his joy and contentment in having worked on a theme so inspiring, in having been blessed with such great personalities as guides and in having been challenged by the very person of Don Bosco and his passion for the young! One of those present in the audience rightly expressed the sentiment of all when he said, ''there was more conviction than polemics in what was discussed!''

Though Fr. John Christy does not return immediately to the province, because of the commitment he has to the 'Project Valdocco' of the Province of Central Italy (ICP), it is of course a great blessing to the province of Chennai and the Salesian India as a whole, that we have one more academically qualified person to inspire many more and to contribute to the passion we have for our charism and spirituality.
