Kolkata, Sep. 21. Dr. Scaria Thuruthiyil SDB, in his latest publication ''Principles and Values of Education in the Indian Tradition'' offers some of the most important principles on which are based the traditional educative systems of Hinduism and Buddhism and the educative proposals of some important educators of modern India, such as Sri Aurobindo Ghosh, Rabindranath Tagore, Mahatma Gandhi and Jiddu Krishnamurti.
The sixty six year old author who is a professor of philosophy in Salesian University, Rome, and former dean of the Faculty of Philosophy of the same University, says about his latest publication: ''Education means inculcating in our students some basic human values, like, human rights, peace, cultural values, interreligious and intercultural dialogue - that are fundamental for an integral formation of our students. The intention in this book is to bring to the knowledge of educators the above-mentioned values.  The Catholic Christian schools, actively involved in the educative mission in India, are proposed (here) as models.''

Dr. Thuruthiyil has several books to his credit - in English, Italian and Malayalam - some of them on philosophy of religion, and others on education and formation of youth. Apart from history of contemporary philosophy, his main interests in research and academic teaching are related to the fields of phenomenology and history of religions, especially Hinduism and Buddhism.

Education is an on-going process in which are involved many people, especially parents and teachers, not forgetting that the child/student herself/himself is the main protagonist.  The book, therefore, is written primarily for educators and those who are directly responsible for the promotion of education. But it is also directed to all those interested in the field of education, keeping in mind that education is one of the basic human rights. ''The supreme value of education is education itself'', asserts this Doctor of Philosophy who  earned his Doctorate in 1987 having done an analytical research on Jiddu Krishanmurti's approach to liberation.

The current book ''Principles and Values of Education in the Indian Tradition'', pages 418, has been published by Don Bosco Publications, Shillong, Meghalaya, INDIA, and can be ordered from The price is Rs.350/10/ 6/$12.
