Dumka Town Roused by Don Bosco Chorus
By Dn. Sanjay Soreng, SDB
Kolkata, Jul. 8. July 7, 2011 was a historic day, when the town of Dumka in Jharkhand State was awakened by shouts of ''Don Bosco Koeyaleme (pray for us)''. The six thousand strong crowd marched to the Cathedral, where Rt. Rev. Julius Marandi, the bishop of Dumka offered Mass.  Later in the evening, Don Bosco was accompanied by ten vehicles to Don Bosco, Joypur in West Bengal. Rt. Rev. Cyprian Monis, the bishop of Asansol Diocese presided over the Eucharistic celebration which lasted two hours
By 11.00 AM the road leading to Dumka Cathedral was blocked with people from the villages, school children, priests and religious.  The youngsters on motorbike prevented any other vehicle from proceeding ahead. Don Bosco kept pace with the six thousand, to the cathedral.  A troupe of over hundred youngsters danced to the tune of Dasai, giving a rousing welcome to the Friend of Youth. The Jesuits gave a special homage to Don Bosco as he passed through Jesu Jaher, their provincial house.

The Cathedral could not contain the crowd, hence the Eucharist was celebrated on the open grounds adjacent to the Cathedral, on an ad hoc basis. During the Eucharist, Bp. Julius Marandi along with sixty other priests welcomed Don Bosco to the diocese saying, it is a time of blessing for all.

The liturgy was well conducted with the active participation of the youngsters, who sang and danced to hymns dedicated to Don Bosco. The two hour long Eucharist was followed by homage to Don Bosco by priests, religious and the faithful, who came from the various parishes, and the children from the educational institutions in the heart of Dumka town. Fr. Thomas Ellicherail, the provincial stood by Don Bosco all through, as the faithful paid homage to Don Bosco, as was the practice in every place.

As Don Bosco took leave of Dumka, it was the turn of the MoRD-DBase Project students to show their appreciation for Don Bosco, as they lined up and danced.  Despite the light shower, the faithful would not leave Don Bosco and accompanied him on foot to Tower Chowk, from where he took leave of them.

Fr. Alexander Topno and Br. Johny the only Salesian confreres in Dumka need a special mention, as they were able to bring so many people to Don Bosco, although their presence in the town is only since 2009. Bp. Julius Marandi and the community at Bishop's House Dumka,  Fr. Chrstopher Murmu, the Parish Priest of the Cathedral Parish, Sisters of Charity, MSMHC Sisters, Bethany Sisters and the Secular Sisters of Don Bosco played commendable roles in making Don Bosco feel at home.
