Don Bosco Invited to Auxilium
By Fr. Patrick Lepcha, SDB
Kolkata, Jul. 3. On 2nd July, 2011 Don Bosco was invited to Auxilium Convent run by the FMA Sisters, in their new presence at Mirik. Later during the day, a grand welcome awaited him at Auxilium Convent, New Chumta, with over 2000 people in great expectation, as three tea garden estates declared a holiday in honour of Don Bosco.
Don Bosco set out to Auxilium, Mirik at 6.15 AM accompanied by the Salesians and the local faithful.  15 boarders at Auxilium, Mirik along with the Sisters from Kurseong sang songs and waved flags as Don Bosco was ushered into their new presence, begun in 2008.

Fr. Mathew Pulingathil, the rector and parish priest presided over the Eucharist, concelebrated by other Salesians.  The lively choir sang in English with an occasional sprinkling of Italian words which made the liturgy meaningful. Fr. Thomas Ellicherail, the provincial imparted the blessing of Don Bosco.

After the homage ceremonies, at 9.30 AM Don Bosco left for Auxilium Convent, New Chumta where the FMAs run a Hindi medium school for the poor children of the tea gardens.

Don Bosco arrived at New Chumta at 11.00 AM. ''It was just roses, roses all the way...'' All the School children dressed in four colour jerseys, lined up on the route waving flags shouting ''Jai Don Bosco''.  The women of the parish were at their best with earthen pots on their heads, swaying to the local tunes, leading Don Bosco to the Parish of St. John Mary Vianney.

After the two hour long homage ceremonies and prayer sessions assisted by the military band, the Holy Eucharist began at 2.00 PM presided over by Fr. MC Joseph, the economer of INC. Fr. Maurice D'Souza, the parish priest of New Chumta was very gracious to accommodate the programme in his own premises.

At 4.00 PM Don Bosco moved to Auxilium Convent Chapel, where the Sisters not hiding their emotions, chanted hymns and said spontaneous prayers of thanksgiving, leaving a lasting impression on Don Bosco.

Seeing the joy that exuded in the premises, the sun could not hide her face any more although the clouds tried to blanket him.  He smiled, emitting fine rays as Don Bosco stood in the courtyard of the convent at 4.30 PM, about to leave for Siliguri.

The Salesian Sisters, in the three presences were at their best, in giving honour to Don Bosco through their extended preparations and enthusiastic presence all through. They are engaged in evangelization and faith formation of the people in the villages. They run a boarding as well at New Chumta, a pre-primary school and dispensary at Mirik and take care of the youth centre and parish activities at Kurseong, among many other works.
