St. Anthony's College excels at International Football Tournament
By Fr Gervasius Nongkseh SDB
Shillong, Jun. 9. SHILLONG: St. Anthony's College Shillong made North East India proud by reaching the finals of the football tournament for Colleges in South and South East Asia, held at Kunming, China.
St Anthony's college, one of the premiere educational institutes in Meghalaya and in the Salesian world was invited by Kunming University of Science and Technology (KUST), China to participate in the 2nd South and South East Asian College Student Cultural and Sports Week in Kunming from May 21 to 31. St Anthony's College is the first institution from North East to be invited by a foreign establishment.

The college principal Dr. Br. Albert L. Dkhar said, ''The objective is to give our students, who are also playing for the different football clubs, the much needed exposure and experience.'' He added, ''the event will give the students an opportunity to show their skills and expose them to opportunities to play with bigger clubs.''

Missing out the winning trophy by an inch, St Anthony's College was defeated by the Rajamangala University of Science and Technology Lanna in the finals of the football tournament. The players of the college gave their best throughout the match to keep the opponents at bay but luck did not favour them.

The contingent who returned home on 2nd June was accorded a solemn welcome by a special committee at Mawiong bypass Lane. A motorcade escorted them from there on to the college. At the College they were received by the Management, Faculty, Staff and Students of the College at the main entrance of the college building. They were felicitated by Prof. John J. Dickie, Senior Faculty, Department of Geology with a scarf and a memento of the college. Rev. Dr. Br. Albert L. Dkhar, the Principal, welcomed the team home, expressed his gratefulness to the team for their performance and discipline and applauded their efforts in taking the College to the highest level of the tournament.

Speaking after their triumphant return, Liason Officer, Dr Rakhal K Purkayastha said, ''The College is the only one from the entire North East to be invited to participate for the first time in such an international event.'' He also said that it was a unique opportunity for the college to participate and see one of the biggest universities in the world. He informed that the team has been practicing under the guidance of the coach Rogesterwell Basaiawmoit.

It may be mentioned here that St Anthony's College also emerged champions in the state level tournament organized by the North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) last year.
