Fr. John Med passes away at 96
By Fr, Tarcisius Toppo
Dimapur, Jan. 25. Fr. John Med, former Provincial of Chennai, and a pioneer missionary in the hills of Nagaland and Manipur passed away on 25 January at 10.15 in the morning at Don Bosco School, Chingmeirong, Imphal, in the state of Manipur. He was 96.
A man with a vision, Fr. Med, was bed ridden for a long time, due to his illness and age. His condition had been deteriorating every day. He was several times admitted in the hospital. However, for about a month he was in the house being looked after lovingly by the attendants. His end came on 25 January at about 10.15 in the morning, in the presence of the Confreres and some Sisters.
Fr. John Med, was born on 13 April 1916 in the Czech Republic, and made his first profession on 31 July 1934. He was ordained a Priest on 7 January 1943. As a young man of 18, he left his family and friends, who lived constantly under the oppressive regimes of the Nazis and the Red Army, to share God's love in India, the land of rich cultures, religion, languages, and tribes. He became one in the midst of India's poor and abandoned, bringing them the love of Jesus, in the footsteps of Don Bosco.
During his  77 years of Salesian life, he was served the congregation in several capacities: He been a teacher, formator, leader of the Province, a musician, Novice Master, and a pioneer missionary.  A multifaceted person, Fr. John Med, is counted among the major architects of the Salesian Congregation in India.

The funeral will be held on 28 January at 10.00 in the Morning at Salesian College, Dimapur, India
