Pilgrimage to the Tomb of St. Alphonsa
By Bro. Jacob Prajosh IVD
Dimapur, Jan. 11. Making pilgrimage to a place of importance is as old as humanity itself. Visit to the tombs of persons of importance cleanses of one's iniquities and brings consolation to the weary souls. It has been a long cherished dream of the students of Don Bosco College, Maram to visit the holy place of St. Alphonsa, the first woman saint of India.
A group of 49 students accompanied by Bro. Jacob Prajosh IVD - a Jesus Youth Full Timer - and Sr. Annie Eappen FCC visited Bharananganam, the place of St. Alphonsa, on the occasion of Jesus Youth Jubilee at Kochi on 26 December 2010 on the day of the feast of Holy Family.
The pilgrims were instructed already in the College about the place, St. Alphonsa and her journey to sainthood. The tedious journey from Kochi to Bharananganam did not deter the pilgrims from pacing themselves on the church courtyard and museums depicting the saintly life of St. Alphonsa. They had the holy Eucharist celebrated for them in the chapel of St. Alphonsa by Fr. Benny James SDB, Principal of Don Bosco College, Maram, and the homily preached by Fr. Jose George SDB, Principal of Don Bosco Higher Secondary School, Dibrugarh. After the mass the students moved around the place to see the footprints of the great saint who lived and died there. The students were also fortunate to meet a sister who lived and studied with St. Alphonsa. The group departed from the place much enriched and fulfilled for having seen the hand of God in the life of a cloistered nun who brought love and peace of Jesus in the lives of those who lived with her.
