Salesian Top Brass Meet In Chennai
By Karen Laurie
Mumbai, Feb. 16. The worldwide leader of the Saint Don Bosco founded - Salesian congregation - Rector Major, Angel Fernandez Artime, together with his core team - the General Council - that heads the global departments of Finance, Mission, Youth, Communication, Formation and South Asia; will meet with the leaders (provincials) - together with their central team - from 12 different constituencies (provinces) in South Asia, from February 28 to March 4 in Chennai.
The heads of different departments overseeing the Salesian ministry in the South Asia region will also be present. This gathering, constituting the who's who of the Salesian order - that meets every six years in every region of the congregation - is meeting with a defined agenda: to reflect on the Statistics of the Salesians in South Asia, for a General Evaluation of the region by the General Council, to study and reflect on the Implementation of the General Chapter 27, the Re-shaping of the Salesian mission and for Strategic Planning for South Asia for the next decade.

For an objective outlook, resource persons from outside the Salesian fraternity have been invited. They will address topics like: Challenges to Christian Living in the current Socio-Politico-Religious situation, the State of Religious Life in South Asia today and the Challenges and Perspectives of Salesian Life and Mission in South Asia.

The whole purpose of this meeting is to arrive at a convergence and ownership of one vision and priorities for Salesian life and Mission for the Youth in South Asia for the future. It is envisaged that the outcome of this meeting will set in process systems to project a greater united visibility for a large pan India Network of Don Bosco, reaching out to millions of young people.

Therefore the title for the Team Visit is 'Re-visioning and Re-signification of Salesian Mission in South Asia'.

The Salesian efforts at introspection are aimed at ensuring checks and balances are maintained.  Different teams have been constituted for an in-depth study on different aspects of the Salesian mission in South Asia and they will present their findings at the gathering.
The Salesian Provincial Council of South Asia (SPCSA) has been working on an Evaluation and Visioning exercise since February 2016. They have conducted in-depth interviews with Provincials and Network Heads overseeing areas of Education, Youth Animation, Mission, Communication and Formation in India. They have also held Focus Group discussions with beneficiaries and the people whom the Salesians work with across all provinces. Questionnaires - distributed to Salesians, youth, parents, parishioners, alumni, faculty and staff - have given the SPCSA an idea of the requirements of all stake holders.

The responses have been analysed and a Strategic Plan will be presented to the Rector Major and his team at the meeting. The point of the exercise is for the Salesians to understand their target group, the services currently on offer and the need for any new services and how to enhance the efficiency of people, structure, and processes to implement the Salesian Mission.

Each session has been allotted a time for questions and clarifications to ensure constructive outcomes. After careful observation and meetings with the various teams, the Rector Major will bring the event to a close with the Statement of his Team Visit 2017 and his concluding remarks.
