CATECHETICS INDIA - down memory lane
By C.M. Paul
Kolkata, Aug. 25.   - Religious Education Quarterly Journal (Estd 1983)
After a 5 year lapse - A fantabulous and re-vamped Catechetics India will be re-launched in Kolkata on Sunday 26 August 2018.

The publication was started as the flagship journal of Don Bosco Catechetics India - by the first Salesian Catechetical Centre in India (Calcutta) in 1977 under its Director and Rector late Father Luciano Colussi SDB who authored the first book on CHILD CATECHESIS. Those days, there used to be also an annual meeting of Salesians (both SDB and FMA) Catechetical experts. Today Don Bosco Catechetical and Multimedia Centre (DBCMC) is called Nitika Don Bosco.

When Father C.M. Paul was assigned as Assistant Director of DBCMC from June 1983 to August 1986, Father Colussi encouraged him to start a catechetical journal. The first issue of ''DB Catechetics India'' had 32 + 4 pages. It was hand composed in a small press in Behala as Don Bosco Graphic Arts Tengra could not handle the urgent work. The galleys were brought to DB Graphics Tengra for printing and 1,000 copies were printed and sent out all over India in August 1983.

Father Luciano Colussi was the Editor and Father C.M. Paul was the Executive editor supervising the entire process of soliciting articles from experts, editing, proof reading, printing and dispatching the journal with the help of late Mr Somar Sarkar, office secretary.

In June 1997 when Father C.M. Paul was made director of Nitika and Editor of Catechetics India - the journal's print order was 500 copies.

Father Paul set to work immediately - dropped ''DB'' and kept the name of the journal to CATECHETICS INDIA. Got Mr Farrell Shah, currently director of Social Communications in the archdiocese of Calcutta to design the covers and help with the layout and design of the pages. Number of pages was increased to 40 + 4 pages and print order was doubled to 1,000 copies.

Besides scholarly articles Father Paul included practical tips for catechists with catechetical book and audio visual reviews, as well as Catechetical news from around the world. He also pushed for EXCHANGE of foreign Catechetical Journals. To meet the increased cost of printing the cover pages in colour, he solicited advertisements.

He also devised an aggressive subscription strategy of 3 year subscription offer for the price of two year subscription, ie. one year subscription cost Rs. 100. Pay Rs. 200  only and one gets a subscription for 3 years. After 3 years, if subscriptions are not renewed, each year, one third of subscriptions would lapse. Also Life subscription scheme was started for a down payment of Rs. 2,000 (two thousand) only.

The authors and contributors to the journal were awarded 10 - one year - complimentary subscriptions sent to the persons of their choice with a note on gift subscription.

Father Paul used to attend Catechetical and Media seminars and conferences and promote the journal and collect subscriptions on the spot. Father Robin Gomes and Father Paul travelled extensively to dioceses in northeast India to conduct Catechetical and media workshops and promote the journal which had a print order of 3,000 copies in 2006, when Father Paul left Nitika.

Two sets of bound volumes of Catechetics India since August 1983 to May 2006 are available in Nitika's Catechetical Library.
