College students help hills people with health camp

Kolkata, Nov. 14.  Sonada - In an unprecedented effort a group of college students in Darjeeling teamed up with a health care NGO from Siliguri to offer free health check up for the poor people, 11 November 2017.

A total of 264 people including senior citizens and children had check up in three categories of health care namely General, Gynecology and Eye Care with five doctors and four medical helpers attending at the 8 hour camp.

The Department of Commerce and NSS group memebers of Salesian College Sonada organised a free medical and free eye check up camp in association with Harimaya Chettri Memorial Welfare Organisation Siliguri.

The National Service Scheme (NSS) is an Indian government-sponsored public service program conducted by the Department of Youth Affairs and Sports of the Government of India. Popularly known as NSS, it is a voluntary association of young people in colleges.

Among the volunteer doctors who came from Avyaan Healthcare Pvt Ltd Siliguri were Dr Bhaskar Bharadwaj, Dr Ravi Shankar Singh, Dr Sourav Ranjan for general and Gynecology.

Doctors who assited at the eye camp were Dr Rajan Pradhan and helpers from Dr Pradhan's Eye Care Siliguri.

The president of NGO Avyaan Mr Krishna Chettri was also present.

''It was an honour to work with Harimaya charitable organization who provided with free medical equipments, medicines and all their support. The doctors  assigned were very supportive, cooperative and deligient in their work,'' says 3rd year B.Com student Miss Riya Pradhan.

''The faculty and students of B.Com along with NSS did a good job and helped with most of the task done today. The programme was held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m,'' said Head of B.Com department Mr Uday Mall.

''It gives me an immense pleasure to announce that today's program was a grand success in which nearly 270 people turned up. It feels good that we as a Salesian Family were able to help those that needed most,'' says NSS Cordinator Mr Diwes Pakhrin planning to offer more opportunities to help the people.

Mr Pakhrin assured his team, ''We would try to organise more of this type of camp in the future too.''
