Fr. Mathew Pallipparampil Takes Eternal Rest

Kolkata, Jun. 29. Funeral of Fr. Mathew Pallipparampil (PV) SDB was held in the Marian Basilica at Bandel, 28 June, 2014, in the presence of a large gathering of people including Salesian confreres, other religious, relations of the deceased and lay Faithful. Fr. Nirmol Gomes, Provincial presided at the Holy Eucharist with more than 65 priests concelebrating wth him. The following words inscribed on the altar panel summarised fittingly the life of Fr. PV Mathew, aged 72, who had passed away on 24 June, 2014: ''I will give you Shepherds after my own heart who will guide you with knowledge and understanding,'' (Jer. 3:15).

On the same day at 11.00 A.M. there was a memorial Service at the adjacent Don Bosco School, Bandel, in honour of Fr. PV Mathew who was its Principal from 1982 - 1985. ''The history of Don Bosco Bandel and the life of Fr. Mathew are inseparable. Fr. Mathew was the second Principal of our School from 1982 to 1985 taking over the reins from Fr. Albert Thottungal. Don Bosco Bandel is known for its discipline, family atmosphere and cordial relationship among the students and the Staff. Both Fr. Albert and Fr. Mathew worked assiduously to create such atmosphere,'' commented   Fr. Samuel Mondol, Rector of Don Bosco Bandel.

Numerous past and present teachers and students were also present at the memorial Service. Mrs. Gita Singh and Mr. Champak Mondol, teachers who worked with Fr. PV Mathew addressed the gathering. Thereafter, his mortal remains were brought in procession to the Basilica for the Funeral Mass and final rites.

The Holy Eucharist began at 2.00 P.M.  Fr. Samuel Mondol, while welcoming everyone to the celebration said, ''In a span of twelve days death has knocked at the door of our Province once again,'' referring to the death of Br. VD Varkey on 12th June, 2014.

During the homily, Fr. Provincial highlighted the dedication and commitment of Fr. PV Mathew who worked as principal at Bandel, Liluah and Park Circus. ''He was a strict disciplinarian yet kind and loving,'' commented Fr. Gomes. He also underlined many other human qualities of Fr. PV Mathew. Besides being the archivist of the Province he also helped out in the administration of Provincial House as an assistant bursar.

At the end of the Service which was beautifully guided by Fr. Tijo Thomas, Fr. Jacob Thenganakunnel Rector of Provincial House, Fr. Bertie Fernandes a novitiate companion, Mr. Siby Varghese nephew, Mr. Elias from Don Bosco Liluah where he served the longest and Mr. Das Gupta a former teacher of Don Bosco Bandel gave farewell speeches. Mr. Siby thanked the Provincial House community members for their care of Fr. PV Mathew, and the Bandel communities for the fine arrangements made for the funeral.

Fr. Jacob Thenganakunnel performed the last rites at the cemetery, after which the mortal remains of Fr. PV Mathew were laid to eternal rest at the feet of our Blessed Mother.
