By Praveen Lakkisetti
Hyderabad, Feb. 7. A memory, a history dense with lots of pleasant experiences was the mood and mode of all past pupils, priests and teachers gathered in the lap of Don Bosco, Guntupalli on 6th February 2010 celebrating the silver jubilee of the foundation of the school. An important aspect of the day was the lively animation and the participation of the past pupils of the school who meticulously planned and organized the day. Don Bosco`s spirit had come alive!

The celebration of the day began with the words of welcome by the principal, Fr Johnny in the morning. The presence of the past pupils and the former principals and teachers was an added joy. The past pupils of the various batches simultaneously organized various programmes under the trees in the campus. What a change it was. For some of the teachers and the principals it was a Herculean task to identify the past pupils who were once students in the lap of the school. The entire organization was done by the past pupils themselves by way of gathering the addresses and their whereabouts, pooling funds for the day and forming a strong alumni association of the past pupils unit at Guntupalli. The programme, though informal, went on till the lunch time and even later continued with the felicitation of the teachers. There was an ambient of home-coming and the return to the resort of the childhood days. Quite a few responded to the invitation of the school, as it was also put on the web about the silver jubilee. Many who were settled abroad too, responded though not physically but financially through the friends here in India. The gathering ended in the evening before the commencement of the cultural gathering and the official function of the silver jubilee.

The programme in the evening began at 5 pm. The chief guests of the day were Mr Ajay Kumar, Commissioner of the Income Tax and Mr MC Das, Past Rotary Governor and the Retired head of the Department of Tourism at Andhra Loyola college. In their address, both stressed on the values that education needs to impart in the students. Rev. Fr Thomas Koshy was the president for the function. He has been the correspondent of the school for a number of years and a noted personality in Vijayawada. Also present were Rev. Fr EJ Mathew, the founder of Don Bosco High School, Guntupalli way back in 1985 and Rev. Fr M. Balaswamy, the first rector and correspondent and the second provincial of the province of St Joseph, Hyderabad. Both recalled their fond memories of the past amidst the initial struggles that eventually paved the way for the glory of the school up to the present day. It was a recall of the days of the humble beginning in a small way. The former principals of the school, confreres and the teachers who rendered their services were fittingly honoured and felicitated.

The students grabbed the opportunity in performing colourful dances on the occasion. Prizes were distributed to all the winners of the various competitions that were conducted during year both in the school and inter-school competitions. The parents were also given prizes for the events held on the occasion of the silver jubilee. The entire campus was aglow with the lights that created a colouful look for the highway passengers. The programme ended at 10 pm with the vote of thanks.

Fr Johnny, the principal and rector together with the Salesian community and the teachers did a great work in hosting the celebrations in a grand way. The student community too put in their share, by entertaining the people gathered. Don Bosco High School is truly proud of its 25 years history. The days of initial struggles of the pioneers of have borne fruits over the years in the education of the young. May the journey of Don Bosco High School ever continue in higher scales in the near vicinity and may the charism of Don Bosco be spread far and wide in the context of Andhra Pradesh.
