Five New Priests for Myanmar
By Lucas Naw
Abroad, May. 9. Five young Salesians of the Vice-Province of Myanmar were ordained priests by Archbishop Paul Zing Htung Grawng of Mandalay, at the Marian Hall in Anisakan on Wednesday April 2, 2011. Along with two thousand people and fifty priests present for the ordination ceremony, the occasion was further graced by the presence of Archbishop Charles Bo,sdb of Yangon.
The newly ordained are John La Sam, Norbert Khua Lian Thawng, Peter Kam Tung Thang, Peter Louis and Raymond Yi Mon Than. In the history of the Salesian Vice-Province of Myanmar, it is the first time that the Lord has blessed the Vice-Province with five new priests at a time. It was also a unique opportunity for the candidates to be ordained in the presence of the Relic of Don Bosco.
The Eucharistic celebration began at 9:30 a.m. It was presided over by Archbishop Paul. The homily was preached by Archbishop Charles Bo. In his homily, the Archbishop reminded the candidates that like our Lord Jesus, to become a priest is meant to be a victim of sacrifice for the people of God. Referring to the words of Mama Margaret to her newly ordained son, he said ''priests are called to be good victims as they serve others as Mama Margaret told Don Bosco -to be a priest is to begin to suffer.''

After the Eucharist, there was the ceremony of the kissing of the Relic and Archbishop Charles Bo blessed the crowd with the Relic. Fr. Maurice Vallence, Superior of the Vice-Province of Myanmar thanked the Archbishops, priests, religious and people who took part and graced the day's event. Fr Raymond Yi Mon Than said a word of of thanks on behalf of the new priests. A felicitation programme and lunch was organized for the new priests along with their parents and relatives at the St. Joseph Novitiate precincts.

The five ordinandi took as their motto Mathew [20, 28]: ''The Son of man came not to be served but to serve,''
