Bangalore, May. 16. Father Previnth Joe Tony, Salesian of the Sacred Heart Province of Bangalore (INK), successfully defended his doctoral thesis  ''The Notion of Commitment in Amartya Sen: With Reference to its Relevance to Caritas in Veritate'',  on 14 May 2015 at the Salesian Pontifical University (UPS), Rome.

Father Previnth's work is an original, significant, and a first-of-its-kind research that analyzes the commitment theory of well-known Indian economist and philosopher Amartya Sen,  who was awarded Nobel prize for Economics (1998) and Bharat Ratna (1999)], and its relevance to Pope Benedict XVI's social encyclical Caritas in Veritate.

Through his research work consisting of three chapters, Father Previnth defends that commitment which has a limited domain, plays an important role in economic activities and in our lives in society. The dissertation argues that persons have plural identities, because of which their commitments have a wider reach and scope. The work questions the pursuit of mutual benefits in mainstream political philosophy and delineates various arguments for the important obligations of effective power. Taking a cue from Caritas in Veritate, the dissertation identifies points of convergence between love and commitment, truth and informational broadening, dignity of the human person and human agency, integral human development and development as freedom.

Professor. Daniele Pace, a visiting Professor at UPS, and a well-informed professor in the area of economics, ethics and finance was his research guide. Professor Sahayadas Fernando SDB, Professor of Moral Theology,  and Budini Simone, visiting Professor of political philosophy, were the second and third guides.  The defense panel included Former Dean of the faculty of Philosophy Professor Mauro Mantovani SDB , and Secretary General of the University Father Jaroslaw Rochowiak SDB. As a whole, the panel was very appreciative of the erudite approach and the ''commitment'' of Father Previnth evident in his work.

Father Previnth  drew extensive praise for his tremendous effort and was greatly appreciated for his capacity and ability to bring together under one roof the notion of commitment according to Amartya Sen as well as the salient features of Caritas in Veritate.

The filled-to-capacity defense-hall resounded with congratulatory echoes and warm embraces of confreres, friends and well-wishers among whom was present Father Thomas Anchukandam, the former Provincial of Bangalore Province.
