Understanding Addiction and its effects on academic performance of students
Tiruchy, Jul. 25. On the 22nd July, a workshop was conducted in Madurai for teachers from five of our academic schools, on the theme ''understanding and assisting adolescent students coming from a personal or family background of addiction to alcohol and other drugs. There were totally 15 participants, 11 male and four female teachers. The topics covered alcoholism, addiction, brain studies on adolescent children of alcoholics, and prevention of drug abuse among school children. The workshop was conducted by Don Bosco JANANAM, (the Tiruchy Salesian Ministry for Alcoholics) as part of its initiatives for the province's  youth pastoral plan.
Having highlighted addiction as a brain disease, the teachers were given simple techniques from cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) to help the students. The feedback from the teachers was quite positive. They have recommended that the programme be extended to all the teachers as well as the parents. They appreciated both the content and the way it was organized.

This workshop is the first of its kind as it is an inter-region collaboration. The other partner is the Youth off the Streets, a Salesian project for drug abusing youth in Australia, by Father Chris Riley.
