Thousands Venerate Relic at St. Mary's Co-Cathedral

Chennai, Nov. 16. Chennai, 15 November: An unprecedented number of devotees thronged St. Mary's Co-Cathedral, (popularly known as St. Anthony's Shrine) Armenian Street, Chennai, to venerate the relic of Don Bosco. Fr. Deva Joe, Rector of the Shrine, received the relic at the campus.

The devotees of St. Anthony who flock to St. Mary's Co-Cathedral on Tuesdays were in for a delighted to see the relic of Don Bosco, placed in front of the altar for public veneration. Earlier, at 8.30 a.m. a solemn reception was accorded to the relic with a Guard of Honour by RSP, NSS, Scouts and Flag bearers of St. Mary's Anglo-Indian Hr. Sec. School from NSC Bose Road.
At the gate of the Shrine, Fr.  Deva Joe, the rector, and Fr. Siby Mathew, the Principal of the School, together with other Salesians received the casket. From 9.30 am the students of St. Columban's Anglo-Indian Hr. Sec. School and St. Mary's Anglo-Indian Hr. Sec. School had veneration of the relic. The devotees who came in large numbers had to stand for hours in queue to pay their homage to the sain. The holy Mass at noon was celebrated by Fr. Raphael Jayapalan sdb, the Salesian Provincial. In his homily he said Don Bosco ''is a treasure not only of the Salesians but also of the whole world of the poor.''
Throughout the afternoon and in the evening large numbers of people of other faiths poured into the campus to have a glimpse of the relic. Fr. Deva Joe, the rector of Shrine, speaking to media persons, explained the significance of the relic-event and the holiness of Don Bosco.
Most Rev. Dr. A.M. Chinnappa SDB, Archbishop of Madras-Mylapore celebrated s solemn Eucharist in the evening. In his homily, the archbisyhop said, ''Don Bosco's greatness lies in the fact tht with a childlike heart he offered his time and energy for the marginalized youth.'' After the Eucharistic celebration, people kept venerating the relic. The religious of St. Mary's Shrine, the Basic Christian communities and the JMJ youth of the parish took turns to animate the night vigil.
On 16th November, at 5.30 a.m., the Vice Provincial of Chennai, Fr. Anthonyraj SDB, celebrated the Eucharist before the Relic left the co-cathedral.

His sermon during the mass highlighted that Don Bosco is not a brand name but he is a saint. ''He is a treasure not only of Salesians but also of the world of the poor'' said the Provincial.

On the next day, at 5.30 am the Vice Provincial of Chennai, Rev. Fr. Anthonyraj SDB celebrated the farewell Eucharist for the relic.
