Fr Ian Figueiredo: INP PROVINCIAL (2010-2016)
By Ralin De Souza
Konkan, Jun. 14. Fr Loddy Pires in his letter to the confreres announced the good news given by the Rector Major Don Pascual Chavez, that Fr. Ian Figueiredo, the present Vice Provincial, will be the next Provincial of the province of Panjim-Konkan (INP) for a term of six years.
Fr Ian is not an unknown figure in the province or to India. His 6 years tenure as vice-Provincial of the province, has really brought the fore his qualities of formation and leadership. A son-of-the-soil, native of Loutolim, but presently residing in Panjim, Fr Ian has done his Masters in Science of Education at the Salesian University in Rome (1986-1989). On his return, back to the province he guided the novices of the Mumbai Province at Salesian Training Institute, Nashik for 9 years (1990-1999). His next appointment in Don Bosco Panjim, first as a confrere and soon as Rector, marked the turning point of the Salesian presence in Panjim. The new Oratory was given a new lease of life, with the newly built Oratory complex, and for the first time, the Salesians of the province ventured in higher education, beginning the Don Bosco College, with a graduation degree in Bachelors of Computer Application (BCA). Today, the college has grown to be a formidable presence of the Salesians in Goa.
After a short stint in Don Bosco Youth Welfare centre, Parra, Fr Ian was elected vice-Provincial, and moved residence to Don Bosco Provincial House, Odxel, where he has been in active ministry for the last 6 years.
A fine Oratory and Preacher, one cannot miss the systematic formative thought in his talks. But with the Provincial Chapter just concluded in February, Fr Ian is well aware of the responsibility of the direction the Province is now taking. Fr Loddy Pires, the out-going Provincial, has called for a Rectors meeting on the 16th of July, followed by a Prayer Service for all the confreres who will felicitate Fr Ian for the new responsibility he will now shoulder.
The official Installation will be on the 16th of July 2010, the feast of Mount Carmel.
