Taruni... the women in action

Bangalore, Mar. 12. Over 2000 women gathered together in Don Bosco Hospet for the women's day celebrations that was held on March 8, 2008. The women participated in a rally and programmes organised for the day through TARUNI, the taluk women development society.
Don Bosco, Hospet has been working with young people in providing them access to education through rehabilitation programmes and vocational education. The centre has also been working at different community programmes, especially towards the empowerment of women.

Taruni - the Network of Women Groups

The Taluk Women Development Society - TARUNI, is the net work of women SHGs formed and animated by Don Bosco. Now, it is a registered society that in the future will take care of the development needs of women in Hospet Taluk. Don Bosco is a partner and supporter of this women empowerment programme, a community based organization that will take besides women empowerment, issues like child labour and school drop out situation, educational quality in the area, local political and social development agenda etc.

The women's day celebrations were held on March 8, which is celebrated as the International Women's day. Over 2000 women gathered together in Don Bosco Hospet. They were served some refreshments before the programme began. The programme started with rally which was inaugurated at 2.30 p.m by Mr. Jayanth, a Mine owner.

The women raised their voices with slogans such as ''Unity is strength, Today's saving is tomorrow's income, a drop of water makes the ocean'' etc. The rally lasted for 2 hours.

After this, the gathering assembled for the concluding program in the municipal ground, Hospet. Advocate Bhagyalaxmi Barode was the chief guest for the programme. During her speech, she focused on the girl child who should be taken care of without being neglected in the society. She also focused on abortion and respect for life.

Comments and Commitments

Dr. Anandvally, who was the guest of honor on the occasion, emphasised about health care of women and children particularly during the pregnancy period. She highlighted the various programmes at Don Bosco for the development and welfare of women, youth and children in order to come up in the society. She mentioned that being part of the Don Bosco family and their services, they must recognize, appreciate and participate in the opportunities given to them.

Mrs. Sunitha from the Department of women and child welfare, being a government official, stressed on the various schemes available through the government department, for women. She encouraged the women to come forward in demanding such rights from the government.

Mrs. Sowbhagyalaxmi, the president of Gyana Vigyana Samathi (a movement that promotes the knowledge of science), brought out the issue of drop out children and the role of the parents, especially the mother. She said that the mother has to play a unique role in her family in order to educate the children in spite of their problems of poverty and difficulties that come across their life.

Mrs. Hanumanthama, the president of Taruni Organization read out the report of the activities in which she pointed out various programmes and training which took place during the last one year.

Mr. Deepak Singh, a Mine owner appreciated that Don Bosco is doing a lot of service for the welfare of the people especially for the women who are neglected in the society. He also mentioned that he will join hands with Don Bosco in order to help out the poor and needy.  

Praises and Prizes

Fr. K.D Varghese sdb, congratulated and appreciated the hard work of Taruni and the collaboration of various departments, and generous people who come forward to support our organization and activities and especially those who came forward for the women's day programme.

Sr. Cicily and Sr. Celine, the coordinators of the programme, along with the guests, gave away the prizes for the women who participated in the sports and cultural events which were conducted in honor of Women's day programme. The programme concluded at 7 p.m with vote of thanks by Mrs. Rani, the vice president of Taruni Organisation.
